What is Adult Foot & Ankle Reconstruction?
Adult foot and ankle reconstruction is a complex and specialized field of orthopedic surgery aimed at restoring function, alignment, and stability to the foot and ankle.
This type of surgery is often necessary due to a variety of conditions and injuries that affect the foot and ankle, leading to pain, deformity, and impaired mobility.
What Conditions Require a Foot & Ankle Reconstruction Specialist?
Arthritis: Degenerative (osteoarthritis) or inflammatory (rheumatoid arthritis) conditions that damage the joints.
Complex Foot & Ankle Trauma: Fractures, dislocations, or severe soft tissue injuries.
Deformities: Conditions such as flatfoot, high arches (cavus foot), and bunions.
Tendon Disorders: Issues like Achilles tendonitis, Achilles tedon ruptures, or posterior tibial tendon dysfunction.
Diabetic Foot: Charcot foot, ulcers, or other complications resulting from diabetes.
Types of Non-Operative Procedures
Non-Operative Treatment of Achilles Tendonitis: Physical Therapy-Guided treatment which may include stretching and strengthening techniques combined with ultrasound or low electrical currents to release tension and restore normal biomechanics of the calf and Achilles tendon.
Non-Operative Treatment of Plantar Fasciitis: Physical Therapy-Guided treatment which may include Windlass plantar fascia stretch, heel cord stretching, and sometimes coupled with custom orthotics with the goal of pain relief, muscle control, and minimized inflammation.
Non-Operative Treatment of Posterior Tibial Dysfunction: Physical Therapy-Guided treatment which may include stretching and strengthening techniques combined with ultrasound or low electrical currents to release tension and restore normal biomechanics of the posterior tibial tendon, which is essential for maintaining the arch of the foot and providing stability during walking.
Types of Surgical Procedures
Lateral Ankle Stabilization, Tendon Reconstruction: surgical procedures utilizing FLEXBAND aimed at addressing chronic instability of the ankle and repairing damaged tendons.
Arthrodesis (Fusion): Permanently fusing bones utilizing OSSIOfiber to eliminate joint movement and provide pain relief, commonly performed in cases of severe arthritis.
Total Ankle Replacement: Replacing a damaged ankle with an artificial implant to alleviate pain, restore mobility, and improve quality of life.
Open Reduction and Internal Fixation (ORIF): a surgical procedure utilizing OSSIOfiber to repair and stabilize severe bone fractures.
Osteotomy: Surgically realigning bones with OSSIOfiber to correct deformities.
Soft Tissue Reconstruction: Repairing or reconstructing ligaments, tendons, and other soft tissues.
Bone Grafting: Using bone from another part of the body or a donor to repair or strengthen bones.
