X-Ray & MRI Diagnostic Services
At Premier Bone & Joint Centers, our diagnostic services use the most advanced technology to identify common injuries and conditions that local residents may be living with. Two of these services are X-rays and MRIs.
What’s the Difference Between an X-Ray & an MRI?
Both of these diagnostic services are used to create a picture of the inside of the body. An X-ray uses electromagnetic radiation to capture the image, whereas an MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radiofrequency waves. Which of these your orthopedic doctor recommends will depend on your unique needs, but rest assured, both services are safe.
Why Is an X-Ray or MRI Necessary?
Sometimes an injury is obvious. However, at other times, it’s not. The cause of severe pain in a muscle or ligament, for example, may not be easily determined by a physical examination, in which case, your orthopedic specialist may recommend an X-ray or MRI. With the images created by the X-ray or MRI, the doctor can then make a more accurate diagnosis, which is integral to determining the proper treatment.
Preparing for Your X-Ray or MRI Scan
On the day of your X-ray or MRI scan, you’ll be asked to remove any metal objects from your person, including your keys and your phone. It’s a good idea to wear comfortable clothes that don’t contain any metal, such as zippers and buttons. While both services are painless, they may cause discomfort if you’re experiencing pain with your injury or condition, so feel free to take any pain medications as prescribed. Furthermore, let your orthopedic physician know if you’re claustrophobic. There are medications available that can help you more comfortably relax during your MRI scan.
If you’ve injured yourself or are living with a condition that is affecting your freedom of movement, the orthopedic specialists at Premier Bone & Joint Centers are ready to help.
