Tendonitis

As the name suggests, tendonitis is the inflammation of a tendon, a band of tissue that connects a muscle to the bone. Inflammation typically occurs when the tendon is overused or overloaded, making it a common condition for people who repeatedly move the same muscles or lift heavy objects—athletes, musicians, manual laborers, and weightlifters, for example. In fact, in the sports world, the condition is prevalent enough to garner other names like:

Other forms of tendonitis are de Quervain’s disease (tendonitis of the wrist), Achilles tendonitis, and rotator cuff tendonitis (tendonitis of the shoulder).

Symptoms of Tendonitis

The type and intensity of the symptoms vary depending on where the inflammation occurs and how severe it is but typically include:

  • A dull, achy pain

  • Tenderness, swelling, and redness

  • A grating sensation when the tendon is moved
